For Optimal Health and Healing, Look Inside

Over the last few Blog entries we discussed where true healing comes from. We determined that healing comes from within and that doctors (including chiropractors) are merely facilitators of healing. We also explored the reason why we wait until most health problems reach a crisis state before we do something about them.

In this installment, I’d like to explore this second idea a little further. There are a few reasons why we rely primarily on heroic and often extreme medical interventions. The first is precisely what we discussed in November, namely, that most health problems are insidious, and unless we take a consistent proactive approach, we find ourselves in crisis.

The other reason, however, is our belief that we can do little for our own health, and we constantly require the ministrations of the modern doctor. And in many instances that is indeed true. Genetic disorders are a prime example of where modern medicine shines. Another obvious example that comes to mind is severe trauma. We would be crazy not to utilize medical services in such instances.

But for many of the diseases and disorders which are prevalent in modern Western societies, the heroic interventionist approach is exactly the opposite of the one we should take. Cardiovascular disease, cancer, type II diabetes, and obesity related disorders are all examples of health problems where prevention would be far more effective (and much cheaper).

However, our culture glorifies the heroic approach, whether during TV medical dramas or the nightly news where the new pill or surgical procedure is touted as being the next great savior of mankind. Even when these treatments don’t seem to exhibit the benefits that were initially expected, we cling to them with near religious devotion. For instance, given the enormous amount of money and resources invested in the “War on Cancer”, after 40 years the results have been disappointing to say the least. In fact, because we have been so focused on finding a miraculous cure, the incidence of cancer has increased dramatically over this same time period. What you focus on is indeed what you move toward.

I suggest a different approach. Why not take personal responsibility for your health and your life. It’s not as hard as you think, and this approach could provide you with a life more joyous and fulfilled than you could imagine!
